Meet my guinea pigs Dink, Kuzco, and Alfie.
Come on in and take a look at my much-loved, horribly-spoiled guinea pigs, Dink, Kuzco, and Alfie. I post pictures of them on a regular basis and they are incredibly important parts of my life, so they're worth getting to know if you're interested in my journal. Even if you're just wandering by, the pictures are cute. Without further ado:

Sir George Leonard Dinkerton, otherwise known as Dink. Chocolate agouti smooth-coat boar with two white splotches on forehead, golden underbelly, and black eyes. Born approximately June 25th, 2005. Dink came first and is older, making him the unequivocal alpha pig. He is big, healthy, social, and people-oriented, a bit pig-headed and almost fearless. He sleeps on my lap, adores cuddle time, and gives kisses. Dink will always be my number one boy, and I love him to death. He's also my first "own true pet," a companion while I'm away at college, and a piggy to love and spoil always.

Kuzco, named after the main character in the Disney movie The Emperor's New Groove. Abyssinain cross boar in gold and brown agouti with one white foot, a gold tummy, and black eyes. Born approximately November 15th, 2005. Kuzco came into my life first and foremost to be a companion for Dink, and at first he was shy and young, making him the perfect omega pig. He used to follow Dink around obsessively, but has gained independence and personality with age. Incredibly skittish, with a Napoleonic complex, Kuzco is a bundle of contradictions, both complacent and incredibly pig-headed.

Alfie, formally known as Lord Alfred. Pink eyed white short hair, peruvian, and texel cross with short hair on his body and three long-haired tails on his butt. Born approximately April 1st, 2006. Alfie was adopted from the Oregon Humane Society because I had room in my apartment and my heart for another guinea pig, and I thought that adding a third might make the cage dynamic more stable. He bonded well with Dink and very poorly with Kuzco, so now Dink and Alfie share one side of the cage while Kuzco has the rest of it partitioned off for himself—and finally, everyone is happy. Alfie has no particular love for people but a great love for life: he's skittish if you try to pick him up, but loves to eat, explore, and play. He's also a bit daft, with behaviors almost as unusual as his coat.

Dink and Kuzco together make a wonderful pair, at first. The difference in their ages, sizes, and personalities has prevented fighting, Dink was happy to have company, and Kuzco took comfort in having someone to follow around. As he grew up, however, Kuzco became more argumentative and less complacent. After Alfie joined them things became more lively but also more stable. Kuzco and Alfie got along well, leaving Dink to be independent and more human-oriented. But as Alfie grew up, he bonded instead to Dink, and Dink and Alfie began to pick on and alienate Kuzco. Ultimately, I separated them into two parts of a divided cage 20 square foot C&C cage. Now they chatter at each other through the bars but otherwise leave well enough alone, Dink and Alfie an unlikely bonded pair and Kuzco living on his own. At least they all still look good together, and I am happy with my herd for royalty: Sir Dinkerton, Emperor Kuzco, and Lord Alfred.

Thank you. ^_^ My boys are spoiled, and I'm rather proud to know that it shows.

Pet store piggies generally aren't that healthy. Cramped and poor living conditions means that a lot of them end up pregnant, with upper respiratory infections, or with mites, or with all number of other diseases. And that can definitely impact how happy and healthy they appear.

i'm talking with some local shelters and rescues now, hopefully i'll get approved soon!

the cabana iam setting up makes the petstore setup look more and more awful to me. :(

i was thinking of doing fleece/towels uinder the bedding - is that what you do? i noticed in your pics i see towels and such. i used to cloth diaper my kids, so it seems to make sense.

I'm glad to hear that. Dink is an accidental litter rescue, Kuzco is a pet store pig (wonderful pet store, though, and with no pigs up for adoption at the time, or I wouldn't have purchased him...), and Alfie is a shelter rescue. They all came to me healthy and ... well, sane-ish, as it goes. Shelters and rescues are definitely the way to go. Good luck there. ^_^

I use fleece as a top layer, and towels (two layers) for absorption. I used to line with newspaper, but I can't be bothered to anymore. It's definitely a good setup, although the washing/relining is one more step and sometimes a bother. But it's cheaper and produces a lot less waste. The boys currently have a ten square foot cage—I would hate to have to buy bedding for a space that big.

Hey, I have friended you. Hope you don't mind! I too have a soft spot for rodents, namely my hamster D'Artagnan - who likes to force so much celery into her face that she looks like this.

Oh I love your piggies. I agree with you about petstore piggies and how nasty their conditions can be. I prefer adoption greatly, for all my animals.

My own little Ted and his brother S'moore were part of a litter from my friend, who had far too many guinea pigs. She basically had a 'herd' of about eight piggies. She pampered them all to death--her herd was positively spoiled rotten. When her main pair had a litter she gave me my two sweet little boys. Teddy, their father was a calico rosetted piggie, and the sweetest little guy ever. Sally, their mum was a sleek-haired blonde piggie who enjoyed biting people's ears off. Both my boys were rosetted, but lighter in their calico spots than their dad.

S'moore has past away in recent years, but Ted is still going strong at age eight. He's my fat old sweetie pie.
